Injuries
Trent Grisham10-Day-IL
Grisham (hamstring) traveled with the Yankees to Boston and took on-field batting practice Thursday, but he'll likely need to take part in a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated from the injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
More detail
Grisham seems to be making steady progress from the right hamstring strain that has kept him out of game action since June 12. The veteran outfielder had previously been limited to "light" on-field agility exercises, so his ability to take batting practice represents a tangible step in his progress toward a return. Though Grisham is with New York for its road trip, there is no expectation that he'll be activated in the coming days. Rather, he appears slated to take part in a minor-league rehab assignment at some point in the coming weeks with the hope that he'll return to the Yankees before the All-Star break.
Ryan McMahon10-Day-IL
The Yankees placed McMahon on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a throat infection.
More detail
Per Jack Curry of YES Network, McMahon is also recovering from an ear infection. McMahon hadn't played since Sunday, and with the Yankees' upcoming schedule being heavy against left-handed pitching, the decision was made to put the lefty-swinging third baseman on the shelf. He's expected to return from the IL when first eligible July 3. Jose Caballero, Amed Rosario and Oswaldo Cabrera could share the third-base job while McMahon is out.
Max Fried15-Day-IL
Manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Fried (elbow) is expected to begin facing hitters by late June or early July, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
More detail
Fried has been throwing off a mound for about a week and is now asymptomatic after landing on the injured list in mid-May with a bone bruise in his left elbow. He remains without an official timeline and is likely to embark on a rehab assignment before coming off the IL, but a return to the rotation at some point in July remains possible.
Clarke Schmidt60-Day-IL
Schmidt (elbow) tossed a side session Wednesday and is "a couple of weeks" away from facing live hitters, per MLB.com.
More detail
Schmidt is now almost a year out from the internal brace procedure he underwent last July. The veteran hurler began throwing from a mound in early April but has been limited to side sessions so far. If he continues his throwing program and is able to face hitters in late June or early July, Schmidt could feasibly be ready for game action at some point in August.
Giancarlo Stanton10-Day-IL
The Yankees announced that Stanton (calf) reinjured his calf and will have a slow week of activities, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
More detail
Stanton has been on the injured list since April 28 and may not be close to coming back anytime soon. Prior to his injury, the 36-year-old was slashing .256/.302/.422 with three homers in 96 plate appearances. The Yankees will likely continue to rotate Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt at DH in Stanton's extended absence.
Aaron Judge10-Day-IL
The Yankees announced Thursday that Judge has a stress fracture of his first rib on his right side and will be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks before being re-evaluated, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
More detail
In other words, 4-to-6 weeks is the minimum amount of time Judge will spend in recovery before the team conducts further imaging on the ribs. He'll likely then need a period of time to ramp back up if everything comes back clean. Judge will head to the 10-day injured list, but the Yankees said the 34-year-old is expected to play again this season. It's an absolutely crushing blow to the New York lineup and for fantasy baseball. Judge hasn't played since May 31, and Jose Caballero and Max Schuemann have been seeing the playing time in right field. Spencer Jones could also be an option for promotion with Judge looking at an extended absence.
Travis MacGregorDay-To-Day
MacGregor underwent Tommy John surgery last September and will miss the entire 2019 season, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.
More detail
A 6-foot-3, 180-pound projectable righty, MacGregor wasn't really on the dynasty-league radar, but he could have gotten himself there with a healthy, productive season at High-A. Instead, he will be on the shelf all season and may not even be healthy in time to pitch in winter ball. He will likely head back to Low-A to open the 2020 season to knock off rust before an assignment to High-A.
