Moreno was initially slated to serve as the designated hitter for Sunday's must-win game. However, he has now been scratched due to a hamstring issue that cropped up Friday, though he could be available off the bench as a pinch hitter. Pavin Smith will now be the designated hitter, with Jordan Lawlar entering the lineup in center field while Tim Tawa moves to first base.

Burnes showed diminished velocity in his last start versus the Yankees, serving up three home runs during a four-batter span at one point. The veteran righty had a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery earlier this season when he suffered a teres major strain, though there's no indication at this point that the new injury is related. It's unclear whether Burnes has a chance to pitch at some point in the postseason, should the Diamondbacks qualify. Burnes had been slated to start Saturday's game in San Diego, but that assignment could now go to Ryne Nelson.

Locklear ended up being a casualty of the 26-man active roster after the Diamondbacks needed to clear a spot for outfielder Jordan Lawlar's (hamstring) return from the 10-day injured list. After being recalled from Reno on July 17, Locklear served mainly as a short-side platoon player during his time with Arizona, batting .278/.357/.444 with one home run, one stolen base, six RBI and eight runs in 15 games. He'll get the chance to play on a more regular basis at Triple-A.

Thompson initially landed on the injured list Aug. 5 with a lower-back strain, so his move to the 60-day IL will officially rule him out for the rest of the season. Blake Walston (elbow) will return from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move to claim the open spot on Arizona's 40-man roster.

Puk suffered a shoulder capsule sprain while pitching in a rehab game in June, and MRI results revealed in July that he still hasn't fully recovered from the injury. After seeking out a second opinion, the left-hander is now officially set to miss the entire 2026 campaign. Puk is set to become a free agent this coming offseason and will shift his focus toward getting healthy for the start of 2027.

The throwing program began with Saalfrank tossing out to 60 feet. The left-hander underwent shoulder surgery ahead of spring training and is considered out for the season.

Mena sustained a teres major strain in his right shoulder in June of 2025, which caused him to miss the rest of that season. He opened 2026 on the 60-day IL and was cleared to resume his throwing program in mid-May. However, it appears Mena suffered another setback in his recovery, and his shoulder injury is severe enough for him to undergo a season-ending procedure. The hope for the Diamondbacks is that the surgery will have the 23-year-old fully healthy for the start of spring training in February.

Mize gave up a home run in each of the first three innings. In his 10 starts as a Padre, he's posted a 7.46 ERA with 13 home runs allowed over 44.2 innings. He posted a 4.32 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 110:38 K:BB through 131.1 innings over 26 regular-season starts, but given his recent form, it'll be tough for San Diego to trust him with a start in the wild-card round.

Musgrove has yet to pitch for the Padres this season. as he's struggled to recover from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in October of 2024. The veteran hurler fared mostly well during a four-game minor-league rehab stint in August, but he was ultimately pulled off the assignment because he was having trouble recovering between starts. There's still a chance San Diego could activate Musgrove to see what he can give them, but he'd be limited to a relief role if that were to happen.

Andujar had been rehabbing with Triple-A El Paso before the club's season ended Sunday. Over nine games with the Chihuahuas, Andujar slashed .306/.316/.444 with no homers, five doubles, five RBI and a 1:4 BB:K. It appears the veteran infielder/outfielder is at the end of his recovery, but it remains to be seen if San Diego will make room for him to be activated from the IL before the end of the season.

Estrada has been on the IL three different times this season, with his latest stint coming as the result of a right shoulder impingement. Though the righty reliever has been rehabbing in Arizona, the fact that he's yet to resume throwing suggests that he's not certain to pitch again this season. Estrada had been a key late-inning asset for the Padres before getting hurt, recording 13 holds and one save while posting a 3.48 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 31 innings spanning 33 appearances.

When Laureano underwent right hip surgery in early June, he was given a return timeline of 4-to-5 months. Though the veteran outfielder has been able to work his way up to swinging a bat and doing some throwing, that initial timeline doesn't appear to have changed. It still seems likely that Laureano's next game action won't take place until 2027, though there may be an outside chance he will return in October if San Diego makes a deep run in the playoffs.

Rengifo was diagnosed with complete ACL tear and MCL sprain of his right knee Monday, so the move to the 60-day IL is hardly a surprise with him out for the season. The 29-year-old opened the campaign with the Brewers but was cut loose after posting a .534 OPS in 57 games, but he then signed with the Padres and found success with a .784 OPS in 38 contests prior to the injury.

Giolito landed on the injured list June 23 due to right elbow inflammation but was able to resume light throwing within a week. However, the veteran pitcher hasn't yet progressed to facing hitters, and it's unclear how far away a minor-league rehab assignment may be. By the time Giolito is ready to rejoin the Padres, both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Nick Pivetta (forearm) may have returned to action, which could impact Giolito's place in the rotation following the trade-deadline acquisitions of Robbie Ray and Casey Mize.

The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Lucas Giolito, who signed a one-year deal with San Diego. Hoeing will miss the entire 2026 season after having surgery in March to repair his flexor tendon.
