Winn will ride the pine for Sunday's series finale after going a combined 1-for-7 through the first two games against the Nationals. Thomas Saggese will play shortstop and bat sixth for the Cardinals.

Jordan was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain in late August. While he recently shed his walking boot and began incorporating some baseball activities, the Cardinals ultimately decided to shut him down early because of the severity of the injury he suffered, according to Denton. The 23-year-old Jordan ends his rookie season with a .247/.276/.382 slash line and three homers over 199 plate appearances.

Baez was injured during Wednesday's game against the Giants, and subsequent testing revealed the strain. He will be eligible to return for the final game of the regular season, but the injury will almost surely end his campaign. It's an unfortunate conclusion to the rookie season of Baez, who flashed both the good (seven home runs, .510 slugging percentage) and bad (30.6 percent strikeout rate) of his profile.

It was the first game in nearly a month for Pereira, who is working his way back from a left hand contusion. It's unclear whether the 25-year-old outfielder will need any more rehab contests, but he's poised to rejoin the Cardinals' active roster before the regular season concludes. Once he does return, Pereira could see playing time versus lefties.

Dobbins was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 22 with right forearm discomfort, but after he received a second opinion on the arm Tuesday, he opted to undergo elbow surgery. The 27-year-old has now undergone two procedures on his right elbow in his young career, and he may be forced to miss the entirety of the 2027 campaign while recovering. Dobbins made 11 appearances, including eight starts, with St. Louis this season, posting a 3.67 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 52 strikeouts over 54 innings.

Rajcic has been sidelined since early July and indication had been that his injury was serious, so it's not a surprise that he ultimately went under the knife. The right-hander will be sidelined, at minimum, until late in the 2027 campaign. Rajcic has yielded five runs with an 8:6 K:BB over nine innings out of the Cardinals' bullpen in 2026.

Ortiz is banged up, primarily nursing a knee injury in addition to abdominal and groin issues. He'll sit out Sunday's finale in hopes that he'll be as close to 100 percent as possible for the NLDS. David Hamilton will handle third base for the Brewers on Sunday.

The recent return of Sal Frelick from the injured list appears to have cost Vaughn playing time against right-handed pitching. With Frelick settling back in as the Brewers' primary right fielder, Jake Bauers has resumed seeing most of his playing time at first base, closing off Vaughn's primary path to playing time. Vaughn will head to the bench Monday for a fourth straight game.

Anderson went down with right biceps inflammation just last week, so it's a good sign that he's already been cleared to pitch in games again. The right-handed reliever is eligible for activation in one week and is tracking toward being ready at that time.

The initial expectation when Woodruff was diagnosed with a capsule injury in his right shoulder in July was that he'd require season-ending surgery. However, he was able to avoid an operation after the shoulder healed more quickly than anticipated, and Woodruff was cleared to resume throwing in late August. He will not make it back before the end of the regular season, but there's a slim chance Woodruff could pitch at some point in the postseason.

Fitzpatrick was diagnosed with a left UCL strain in early June, necessitating this week's surgery. He'll now be sidelined for the remainder of the current campaign and much of 2027, though he could return in the second half of next season if his recovery and rehab goes well.

Priester has dealt with thoracic outlet symptoms since last season, and he attempted unsuccessfully to treat it with rest and rehab. After consulting with Dr. Gregory Pearl on Tuesday, the decision was made to have surgery. Priester expects to be ready to go for the beginning of next season, but the track record of pitchers coming back from this type of procedure isn't great.

This transaction has been an eventuality since it was announced in early May that Zerpa required a UCL reconstruction on his left elbow. The 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined until around midseason of 2027.
