Romero was dealt from the Cardinals to the Brewers at the deadline, but he's been on the shelf since July 14 due to appendicitis. While initial injury updates while he was with the Cardinals pointed to a mid-August return, McCalvy notes that Romero still needs to successfully make it through several side sessions and a rehab assignment, which should set him up for his Milwaukee debut before the end of the month.

Ortiz will miss a second straight start with an upper-back injury. He is considered day-to-day. David Hamilton will again slide over to shortstop, while Andrew Vaughn will grab a start at third base.

The rookie shortstop felt some discomfort during Saturday's contest and believes he could play Sunday, but the club will instead play it safe and send him for medical imaging. Murphy noted that Frelick will likely be limited to designated hitter duty initially on his rehab assignment as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain. Frelick played though shoulder discomfort for much of the season before he finally landed on the 10-day injured list in mid-July. He should return before the end of August if he can avoid a setback.

Kuhnel fired 13 of his 17 pitches for strikes in the rehab outing, his first appearance at any level since July 2 following his placement on the 15-day injured list due to right rotator cuff tendinopathy. Though Kuhnel pounded the strike zone, batters were able to easily square up on him, as all three hits he allowed went for extra bases (one home run, two doubles). The right-hander will need to show improved results over his next few rehab appearances before rejoining the Milwaukee bullpen.

Woodruff previously underwent the same procedure in October 2023 and ended up missing the entire 2024 campaign. He said he intends to pitch again once he's healthy, but after needing approximately 20 months to make a full recovery from the surgery the first time around, he's unlikely to be ready to return to action until 2028. The 33-year-old will close the book on the 2026 season with a 2.98 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 47:10 K:BB through 45.1 innings across nine starts.

Milwaukee needed to free up a spot on its 40-man roster following the acquisitions of Lance McCullers (shoulder) and Colton Gordon from the Astros. The transaction does not alter Zastryzny's timeline, as he's been out all season with shoulder and intercostal injuries. Zastryzny has made three appearances after resuming his rehab assignment earlier this month, but it's unclear when or if he will return to the Brewers' active roster.

Fitzpatrick was diagnosed with a left UCL strain in early June, necessitating this week's surgery. He'll now be sidelined for the remainder of the current campaign and much of 2027, though he could return in the second half of next season if his recovery and rehab goes well.

Priester has dealt with thoracic outlet symptoms since last season, and he attempted unsuccessfully to treat it with rest and rehab. After consulting with Dr. Gregory Pearl on Tuesday, the decision was made to have surgery. Priester expects to be ready to go for the beginning of next season, but the track record of pitchers coming back from this type of procedure isn't great.

This transaction has been an eventuality since it was announced in early May that Zerpa required a UCL reconstruction on his left elbow. The 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined until around midseason of 2027.

It's not clear as to how many pitches Pivetta threw during Monday's throwing session, but it's a good sign that he was able to get back on the mound after exiting his last rehab appearance Tuesday due to tightness in his right elbow. He'll presumably be re-evaluated over the course of the next few days to determine the next step in his rehab.

Giolito landed on the injured list June 23 due to right elbow inflammation but was able to resume light throwing within a week. However, the veteran pitcher hasn't yet progressed to facing hitters, and it's unclear how far away a minor-league rehab assignment may be. By the time Giolito is ready to rejoin the Padres, both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Nick Pivetta (forearm) may have returned to action, which could impact Giolito's place in the rotation following the trade-deadline acquisitions of Robbie Ray and Casey Mize.

It was Musgrove's second rehab outing as he sets his sights on pitching for the big-league club for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in September of 2024. The veteran right-hander tossed 39 pitches in his first rehab start Aug. 4, so he's gradually building up his pitch count in preparation for a return to a spot in San Diego's rotation. Musgrove is likely to need at least one more rehab outing before being activated, but he could be back with the Padres by the end of August, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

Andujar hasn't yet been cleared to take full swings, however, and that will be a major checkpoint in the recovery process that he'll need to hit before his return from the 10-day injured list can be viewed as imminent. The 31-year-old hit .259 with five home runs, two steals, 22 RBI and 24 runs in 74 games with the Padres before landing on the shelf July 20.

Taylor has been sidelined since early July due to a right oblique strain. His timeline for a return remains unclear, though he'll likely need a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated due to the length of his absence from game action. Taylor had been providing a spark for San Diego prior to getting hurt, slashing .330/.410/.398 with one home run, 11 RBI, 14 runs and six stolen bases over 26 contests.

He last pitched June 29, so Adam will now be ruled out until at least Aug. 29. The Padres acquired Chris Stratton from the Pirates and optioned him to Triple-A, and Adam was moved to the 60-day IL to clear up a 40-man roster spot.

Morgan kicked off a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League over the All-Star break, but he made just one appearance before being shut down due to soreness in his right trapezius muscle. The right-hander was able to move past the setback quickly and will likely need just a couple more appearances in the minors before he's deemed ready to rejoin the San Diego bullpen. Morgan submitted a 4.50 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 18 appearances for the Padres before landing on the shelf June 29 due to left knee inflammation.

Manager Craig Stammen said that Laureano's surgery is expected to keep him out for 4-to-5 months, making it extremely unlikely that he plays again this season. If the 31-year-old isn't able to make it back before the end of the year, he'll finish 2026 with a .203/.286/.374 slash line alongside seven homers, 21 RBI, 23 runs and seven steals over 53 games. Gavin Sheets will likely take over as San Diego's primary left fielder for the rest of the regular season, which will allow Ty France to start regularly at first base.

The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Lucas Giolito, who signed a one-year deal with San Diego. Hoeing will miss the entire 2026 season after having surgery in March to repair his flexor tendon.
